Sand Guard

Sandguard – ESP

SandGuard – ESP is installed as part of the production string, positioned above the ESP to protect it from the harmful effects of sand fallback caused by pump shutdown. It is recommended to place the SandGuard – ESP directly above the pump discharge or one tubing joint (or pup) above the ESP discharge head. The SandGuard – ESP can be installed at any location above the ESP as needed. When using two SandGuard – ESP units, the second should be positioned approximately halfway between the pump and the wellhead.

Specification Guide

4-inch tool proposed — please advise on alternative outer diameters and thread connections, e.g., 3.5”, 5.38”, 5.50”, 7”

Features & Benefits

  • Prevents premature wear caused by abrasion
  • Extends ESP run life
  • Increases sustained pump efficiencies
  • Prevents rock initiation of ESP after shutdown
  • Self-cleaning design
  • Eliminates logistics and costs associated with replacement tools during workovers
  • Reduces failures
  • Minimizes downtime
  • Lowers capital expenditure (Capex) and operational expenditure (Opex)

Cyclone™ 2.0 ESP

Eliminating failures in artificial lift systems caused by sand, solids, and abrasives is now achievable with Forum Multilift Solutions (FMS) Cyclone™ sand separator. Featuring new elements that enhance operational efficiency and durability, the FMS Cyclone™ offers fail-safe features to ensure smooth, reliable, and efficient operations. Additionally, the Erosion Bypass Port (EBP) enables the Cyclone 2.0 to maximize solid separation capability without compromising flow area or hang-off weight.

Features & Benefits

  • Incorporates two methods for imparting centrifugal force to the production stream, making it one of the most efficient solids and abrasives separation systems available in the market.
  • Effectively separates solids and sand before they reach production equipment.
  • Fail-safe features prevent erosional failure, extending equipment run life.
  • Significantly prolongs the lifespan of artificial lift and downhole equipment.
  • Reduces or eliminates workover costs.
  • Minimizes or eliminates expenses related to replacing failed equipment.
  • No moving components, increasing reliability and reducing maintenance.
  • Reusable and replaceable Cup Packer element for easy serviceability.
  • Straightforward installation process.
  • Simple redress options available for maintenance or adjustments.

Sandguard – PCP

The SandGuard – PCP is designed to be installed with and positioned above a Progressive Cavity Pump (PCP) or above the pump barrel for Sucker Rod pumping; to offer protection from the harmful effects of sand fallback. Deployed as part of the production string, the SandGuard – PCP should be positioned one tubing joint above the PCP Stator or pump barrel. This allows suitable clearance for the Rotor to be pulled up and exit the Stator (for example for potential flush by), without the Rod/Rotor Coupling entering the SandGuard.

Features & Benefits

  • Flushes automatically at re-start
  • Endless on/off cycles, it is ready to protect at every shut-down every time
  • Minimal pressure drop through tool
  • Protection not affected by particle size
  • Virtually no risk of recirculation
  • Ease of installation – no special tools or expertise is required.

Use Case

SPE Workshop – Sandguard : ESP Sand Mitigation at Muscat, Oman (24-25 Jan 2018)

Our Commitment

We are committed to minimizing risks to Pertamina Hulu Energi Sub Holding Unit (SHU) wells while deploying the SandGuard (ESP/PCP) and Cyclone (PumpSaver+, Pumpsaver) combination within the well completion string.

Candidate Well List for Deployment

  • Minimum of 5 wells for deploying SandGuard – ESP and Cyclone TM ESP.
  • Minimum of 5 wells for deploying SandGuard – PCP and Pumpsaver/Pumpsaver+.

Trial Duration

  • Maximum duration of 6 months.

Review of ESP Completion Scheme and Program

  • Ensuring SandGuard ESP OD with MLE fits inside the casing with sufficient clearance for running in hole, considering SandGuard MLE clamps.
  • Confirming SandGuard capacity meets operational requirements.
  • Proper metallurgical selection for durability and compatibility.

SUCCESS CRITERIA

  • To be defined.
  • Reduce motor startup spikes to less than 150% of the motor’s nameplate amperage.
  • Reduce hard starts (rocking starts) if the ESP trips and needs to be restarted.
  • No failure of artificial lift equipment attributed to SandGuard.

Trial Terms and Conditions

  • The Legal department will prepare terms and conditions covering liabilities and responsibilities.
  • Commercial terms will only take effect once either the Success Criteria are met or the 6-month trial period ends, whichever occurs first. This includes a “No Cure No Pay” arrangement as outlined in Appendix A.
